'Ponyo' gets Grand Prix at DEG Japan's second annual Blu-ray fest

Disney's release of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea was awarded the Grand Prix at the second annual Blu-ray Awards established by the Digital Entertainment Group Japan.

The title won for its superior video quality “which made the world of make-believe pop out of a picture book leaving home viewers think they are in the cinema,” says the jury. All entries had to be released between 1 January and 31 December 2009.

DEG Japan awarded 12 prizes for Blu-ray titles:

- Best Film Brave Heart
- Best Video Video Poem Satoyama and Healing Islands Okinawa
- Best Animation Monsters, Inc
- Best Sound for Music NHK Classical - Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
- Best Sound for Video Wolly
- Best Interactivity Detective Conan – the Black Organisation
- Best Restoration Tora Tora Tora (the 40th anniversary version)
- Judges’ Special Prize Seven Samurai and Mt Tsurugidake – Ten no ki
- Consumers’ Special Prize Bake Monogatari
