Toshiba sues leading disc makers over patent infringement

Toshiba has announced it filed a lawsuit on May 14 with the US District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin to charge US-based optical disc vendor Imation as well as several manufacturers and distributors of DVD discs with infringement of its recordable DVD patents.

The accused manufacturers include Taiwan's top-two optical disc makers CMC Magnetics and Ritek, and India-based Moser Baer India (MBI). In addition, CMC's US marketing subsidiaries Hotan Corporation and Khypermedia, and Ritek's US marketing subsidiary Advanced Media are also on the list of the accused, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

In response, CMC and Ritek simply indicated they have not yet received documents from the court and declined to comment for the time being.
Toshiba is seeking monetary damages and court injunction to prohibit the accused parties' production, imports, sales, disposal or use of DVD+/-R, DVD+/-R DL (single-sided double-layer), DVD+/-RW and DVD-RAM discs in the US, the company said. (Source: Digitimes).
