Rimage, Sonic team up on DVD-on-demand system

Rimage announced its on-demand digital publishing systems will support the Qflix technology licensing and certification programme based on the recently approved industry specifications for securely recording electronic downloads set by the DVD Copy Control Association (CCA).

Qflix enables the legal, on-demand burning of encrypted video content to DVDs playable on standard and high-definition players. Rimage is now able to provide its customers with the new Qflix-enabled technology, developed by Sonic Solutions, and integrated into the Rimage disc publishing platform.

Qflix is a content licensing and certification programme that empowers factory, in-store and in-home disc producers to create on-demand movies and video programmes on DVD. Using Content Scramble System (CSS) encryption, designed to prevent unauthorized copying, individuals will be able to legally download their favorite movies or television programs to DVD.

Before Qflix, there was no technology standard for encrypting DVD media that was burned on-demand, effectively precluding DVD production at retail using in-store kiosks and photo lab replication systems.
