Testronic Labs opens interactive Blu-ray, HD DVD test facility

Leading Quality Insurance provider Testronic Labs has just opened its interactive Blu-ray and HD DVD test facility providing third-party quality control of high definition software and integrated web capability.

The facilities, "designed to deliver optimal service levels in an increasing complex technical arena," will now provide complete testing and quality control solutions for Blu-ray (including HDMV, BD-J and BD-LIVE) and HD DVD (including advanced HDi features such as web connectivity). As part of these developments, Testronic Labs has augmented services at its Empire Way testing facility in Burbank, California.

“With the introduction of the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats, and especially the requirement for testing all aspects of web integration and connectivity, we have seen fundamental changes to quality assurance services within the home entertainment industry. Clearly video formats and menus have evolved. Programming complexity and web interaction have added considerable challenges,” comments Johan Craeybeckx, Chief Technical Officer.

“These challenges have been significant for developers, but testing methodology is equally stretched. In a competitive environment, clients still need to maintain existing release schedules despite the increasing complexity of the process. We have found that working in partnership with those involved in the development process has enabled us to successfully test product despite these additional requirements,” Craeybeckx adds.

By commencing checks in the product development phase, Testronic Labs says it is able to manage shorter release schedules without compromising product quality. Situated adjacent to the Deluxe facility in Burbank, the new facility enables the company to participate in much of the Blu-ray and HD DVD advanced feature research and development conducted at Deluxe, including BD-LIVE and HD DVD network connectivity.

"With studio permission, we've been able to directly access Deluxe’s test servers and test advanced web connected applications in parallel with their development," comments Seth Hallen, Testronic Labs' Executive Vice President. "This unique approach allows for controlled and secure testing of web connected features with very fast turnarounds and without the need to place sensitive content on a public server.”
