Rovi's DivX+ tech brings BD functions to Panasonic's video streaming chipset

Rovi's DivX Plus Streaming technology will be integrated into the 'UniPhier' series of digital television and Blu-ray Disc integrated circuit solutions from Panasonic's Semiconductor Business Group.

The Rovi technology solution offers smooth adaptive streaming from standard definition to 1080p video resolution to help maintain optimal visual quality as bandwidth fluctuates and help provide a buffer-free playback experience.

Bringing the range of feature set characteristic of the Blu-ray Disc consumer experience, DivX Plus Streaming supports subtitles, multiple language tracks, and trick-play features such as smooth fast-forward and rewind, quick-start playback, and resume playback across devices.

DivX Plus Streaming also works in conjunction with Rovi's DivX Plus HD certification to enable offline playback of digital video files with similar advanced features.

The technology is built upon the company's core DivX. The solution also utilises the digital rights management technology currently used by a number of online retailers offering movies in the DivX format including WB Shop and Media Markt.

In April of his year, Renesas Electronics, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, started to incorporate Rovi's DivX Plus Streaming technology into its integrated circuit for connected home entertainment devices.

With a view to understanding the video streaming behavior of the DivX community, Rovi carried out in June an opt-in online survey of users of DivX players in the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy. Some 13,700 people responded. Averaging the results across markets, the survey reveals the following:

- 48% of users have streamed a movie or TV show;

- 68% prefer to stream content to a PC followed by a connected TV or Blu-ray Disc player (20%);

- 53% of users that stream, use a subscription based service;

- Among Video Quality, Convenience, Selection and Price, Video Quality ranks the highest when it comes to the streaming experience. As for the best format to deliver these, unsurprisingly Blu-ray discs and DVDs are chosen by 70% of respondents;

- Smooth fast-forward and rewind is the most requested feature when it comes to streaming (51%);

- Cost is the #1 hurdle that prevents users from purchasing a digital movie (51%);

- 64% experienced buffering/stuttering when streaming.
