Piracy, 3D Blu-ray, digital delivery, key topics at forthcoming PEVE 2011

Piracy, consumers’ perceptions of the value of a digital download and the market potential for 3D Blu-ray will feature strongly on the agenda at the forthcoming PEVE Entertainment conference, according to organiser IHS Screen Digest.

The event which takes place at London’s BFI on March 10-11, 2011 aims to provide delegates from across the industry with solid information and advice to help them navigate the increasingly complex range of home entertainment options open to retailers, rights holders and consumers alike.

Key sessions will examine whether digital delivery can ever tap into the crucial Q4 gifting season and the impact on total home entertainment spending if it fails to do so, as well as assessing the demand for expensive TV box sets in the age of TV Everywhere and iPlayer.

Other sessions will examine the impact of Premium VOD and day-and-date releasing on the industry’s “shop window” — the theatrical release — and examine the whole notion of content ownership in the age of The Cloud.

The 3D sessions will also focus on practical advice: What are the costs involved in producing 3D content at this stage? What assets do you need and is there any point considering 2D-to-3D conversion? And what is the packaged media sector doing to ensure that it doesn’t let broadcasters own the 3D space, as it did with HD?

Piracy continues to have a very real impact on the day-to-day home entertainment business in most markets. PEVE Entertainment 2011 will focus on two very different European markets — Spain and Sweden.

While Spain’s packaged media business has been in freefall since 2003 as a direct result of piracy, initial reports indicated that the introduction of Sweden’s anti-piracy law in 2009 had a dramatic effect on illegal internet activity.

The session will assess whether this result proved sustainable, how these different experiences have affected day-to-day business for industry insiders in each market, and ask what lessons they think their experiences hold for other countries.
