Germany: 1 in 10 discs sold is a Blu-ray

New figures from the German division of GfK have shown that Blu-ray has had another successful year in the region. According to Gfk, every tenth disc sold in Germany in the first half of 2010 was a Blu-ray Disc. Compared to the same period in 2009, this represents year-on-year growth of 127%.

3D home entertainment has also taken off since being the main attraction at this year’s IFA exhibition. 53,000 3DTVs were sold in Germany by the end of September, with GfK forecasting total sales of 150,000 by the end of the year. The market is expected to grow further in 2011 as more Blu-ray 3D movies become available.

“We expect to achieve double-digit million sales by the end of this year, doubling the 6.2 million BDs sold in 2009. We also expect sales of standalone BD players to be greater than one million,” said Kai Uwe Marner, chairman of the Blu-ray Group Germany. “It will be very exciting to see how the market will further grow next year, especially in regard to Blu-ray 3D.”
