Blu-ray player prices come down

Prices of Blu-ray players have dropped by at least 20% over the past 45 days according to a TG Daily report. The price drops affect entry level Blu-ray players including the Sharp BD-HP20U, Sony BDP-S300, Samsung BD-P1400 and Panasonic DMP-BD30K which dropped from around $500 between March and June now selling for just over $250.

So far, Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray player (pictured) has managed to break the $200 barrier with a retailers listing this for under $200. It's current average retail price is $207 according to Pricegrabber (for 15 October).

According to PriceScan, a price- and product-comparison service, overall, prices for Blu-ray players dropped 12% in the third quarter 2008 to $350, after adjusting for new-model introductions and old models pulled from the market. The lowest price BonusView-capable players currently start over $350.

Sherwood America has announced it will release a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player next month with a retail price of $299.95. It is the maker’s first attempt at a Blu-ray player.
