News of $299 HD DVD player premature

News that US retail giant Wal-Mart was to order two million new low-cost Toshiba HD DVD players, manufactured in China by Fukuhiko Electronic for $299 -– $100 less than the list price of Toshiba's entry-level HD-A2 player, was shortlived.

Whether the English translation of the original report in the Chinese-language Economic Daily News was at fault, Fukuhiko Electronic website retracted its initial announcement, now suggesting that Wal-Mart simply inquired about their ability to "provide a schedule" along with "cost and quantity" details for evaluate.

It seems, though, that the "capacity is still under consideration."
