Samsung to launch hybrid player

Samsung has announced that its BDP-UP5000 hybrid machine, capable of playing HD DVD and Bly-ray discs, will be shown at the upcoming IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) show in Berlin next month, with shipments expected by October or November. The player was first announced in April, following LG Electronics' BH100 hybrid player.

Some of the advantages that the company points to are that the player will support all the interactive features including internet extras and interactive menus - and therefore certification - for both formats. It will also play movies at 1080p - something that reviewers previously found the LG BH100 hybrid unable to perform.

"As a member of the DVD Forum and contributor to the DVD Industry, we recognize that both HD-DVD and BD formats have merits," said Dongsoo Jun, executive VP of the Digital AV Division at Samsung Electronics at the original announcement of the player. "As such, we have decided to market a dual format player. Samsung is flexible to market a stand-alone HD-DVD player whenever consumers demand it. Our main concern is not technology but consumer choice."
