Fiji police raids DVD bootleggers

Fiji police confiscated about 4,000 DVD movies believed to be counterfeit which were sold on the last day of Fiji Showcase 2007 yesterday.

The Fiji Audio Visual Industry Association president, Chris Caine said they confiscated the DVDs with the help of the police, which had the authority to carry out such raids. Constable Jone Kolinio (pictured) of the Raiwaqa Police Station carried out the raid.

Caine said prior warning had been given to the two booth owners about the sale of the suspected pirated DVDs to be removed from the shelves. He said talks with the organizer, Total Event Company, to ensure the suspected counterfeits were removed was not taken seriously.

Caine said illegal sale of DVDs was not normal and they were trying to ensure it was not sold in Fiji. He said they wished to send a message to people that those who violated copyright laws would be taken to task.
